On the Name
By The House Desk · Brand Systems & Voice →
We named the most provenance-obsessed store in the category after the word the category uses for weed with no provenance at all. This was not an accident.
Ask anyone fluent in this culture what boof means and they will not hesitate: it is the bag you regret. No name, no grower, no lot, no story — the stuff that taught a generation to ask better questions. Boof is the word for everything this store exists to end.
So we put it over the door.
The oldest trick in luxury
Fashion has been doing this for as long as it has been interesting. The trash pouch on a runway. A house named for the French word for clothes, as if branding itself generic. The label whose whole name is an insult to labels. When a house takes the lowest word in its own room and wears it, the message is not self-deprecation — it is confidence with its collar open. You can only afford the word when nothing else about you resembles it.
The test built into the door
The name is also a filter, and we mean it as one. If you know, you smiled already: a store where every jar carries its plot, its harvest window, its lot, and its lab sheet, calling itself BOOF, is the least boof object in the category. The joke is a handshake. It says: you speak this language, and so do we, and neither of us is precious about it.
And if you do not know the word — good. You will learn it here backwards: first as the name of the place with the liner notes and the vintages and the certificate framed by the coat check, and only later as the thing it used to mean. We can think of no better way to retire a word than that.
The standard the joke has to carry
A name like this writes a cheque the catalog has to cash every single day. The moment the provenance slips — a lot unlisted, a sheet unlinked, a story vaguer than the label — the joke collapses into the plain old meaning, and we deserve it. That is why we like it. The name is not a punchline; it is a standard with a sense of humor.
Boof, reclaimed. The worst word in the room, over the best door on the street.
And the house motto, adopted the same hour as the name, because the breath is the whole gesture: in with the good, out with the boof.
